In this blog, Tjeerd Froentjes, studying Public Administration through a European Masters Programme, explores the intersection of academia and adventure, balanced wonderfully by the University of Limerick.

Let me share my journey as an exchange student at the University of Limerick—it’s been an incredible experience! In my home country of the Netherlands, it is not usual to go on an exchange as a post-grad because it requires another half year. However, I wanted to experience living abroad before being done with studying to prepare myself for a potentially international career. Fortunately, through the European Master of Public Administration program, I got the chance to spend the spring semester here! From academic pursuits to getting involved in various activities, UL has truly been a wonderful chance for me to develop.

Academically, UL certainly hits the sweet spot. What stands out most to me is that classes are personal, giving you the chance to really engage with your professors and peers. One of my courses only consists of two other students and the first class we had involved going to a café near the lecture hall to grab a coffee with the professor to get to know each other. They’re also offering some hybrid classes, which has been a game-changer for balancing studies with other commitments.

It’s not all about hitting the books. UL offers some fantastic extracurricular opportunities too. I’ve been involved in the Global Leadership in Sustainable Development program, where we tackle real-world issues head-on. As my experiences so far have mostly been academic it’s great to have this opportunity to learn some practical skills. Plus, being a UL ambassador has allowed me to connect with a group of students from all over the world and expanded my network greatly. And let’s not forget about the post-grad union—it’s another great way to connect with other students and enables you to have your voice heard in university matters.

As for campus facilities, UL doesn’t disappoint. The library is top-notch, with a dedicated area for post-grads that has become my go-to study spot. And when it comes to accommodation, UL offers a range of options to suit every student’s needs. I chose for Dromroe village, which is mainly reserved for students that are further in their studies. It has a chill environment, and it is only a few minutes’ walk from all the university’s buildings, making it the best choice for me.

So, if you’re considering where to pursue your postgrad studies, look no further than UL. With its blend of a refreshing academic approach and great extracurricular opportunities it’s the perfect place to further your education and make lifelong memories through wonderful experiences.
