UL Global Student Ambassador Daniel Ryan explains his experience on Non-EU Exchange in UT Austin:

Studying abroad at UT Austin was an experience I’ll cherish for my entire life! As someone who dreamed of going to America for seven years, I am so grateful for the friends I made, the cities I explored, and the lessons I learned along the way.

Going to the States was something I’ve dreamed about since I was 14 years old, fascinated by its politics and “American Dream” philosophy. So, when the University of Limerick offered me the chance to study abroad in the States, my eyes glowed with excitement. It didn’t take much convincing for me to pick the University of Texas at Austin, the best public university in Texas, and amidst the top 50 in the world!

Adjusting to the American way was quick and easy. Texas Global held orientation events that joined all the international students together, including scavenger hunts, Texas two-step dancing, and bus trips. I didn’t realise until now that my best friends from that semester also attended these events. It goes to show that no matter where you are, the world really is a small place.

Student perks were another great bonus of studying at UT Austin. For free, I got access to the campus gym, local museums, and public buses. Student discounts were also available at the cinema, bowling arena, and other recreational services on campus. UT Austin makes college life very convenient for students.

And did I mention the turtles? UT Austin has its own turtle pond where people can admire their mini celebrities on campus! Even if you’re not their biggest fan, there are plenty of squirrels and rabbits to keep you entertained as you walk from one class to the other.

Regarding academics, I was able to continue my BA in Journalism and Digital Communication with Law while in America. My “Fundamental Issues in Journalism” class with former New York Times editor Kathleen McElroy was an incredible element of my Study Abroad semester.

Every week, we listened to guest speakers who specialised in various parts of the industry, discussing the moral aspects of their work. Whether it’s about inclusive language, media representation, or verifying sources, I carry their lessons to heart thanks to these classes.

Taos has a study room, game room, gym, dining hall, and some of the best people I’ve ever met. You are required to do four hours of mandatory labour like cleaning and cooking, but I think it’s well worth the value for what you’re getting.

Back to this gorgeous city! I can’t emphasize enough just how beautiful Austin is, with its clear skies, warm climate, and vibrant lifestyle. Every weekend, there was always something new to do. My friends and I would often disappear for an afternoon to watch movies, play mini golf, or even visit Congress.

Colorado River and Zilker Park were also gorgeous spots to enjoy the natural environment (I’d recommend going at night to hear all the bats!). Despite Austin being more humid than other Texan locations, it never took away from the endless travelling and adventures we went on.

Speaking of which, while you’re in this country, you have to see what lies beyond the state border. Flight prices are cheap once you plan ahead so before you come to America, have an idea of where you want to go. If you enjoy Hollywood, then Los Angeles is the place for it. Interested in politics? Then Washington D.C. is a lovely city to visit. And then there’s the Big Apple, New York City. For an Irishman, that place is like a second home so make sure to tick that location off your travel bucket list!

Lastly, I have to mention the Texan culture here. True to its “Southern hospitality”, Texas is the perfect state to understand why Americans have such a boisterous character, always welcoming the next brave soul in search of their American Dream.

People want to get to know others and are always willing to add one more to their group. “The more, the merry,” might as well be the mantra for Texans! Because of this, I made great friends who helped me develop as a young adult trying to find his way in life. It’s really true when people say that studying abroad helps you meet the best people ever!

For my final thoughts, I want to say that if you’re considering a semester abroad, whether it’s in America or not, take that leap of faith. The best things in life will always seem scary at first, but once you put yourself out there, you’ll realise there’s a whole world ready for you to explore. And you’ll love it!

A big thank you to UL Global for giving me an opportunity of a lifetime, and making me excited for my next adventure abroad!

Daniel Ryan. Dia dhuit! My name is Daniel and I am thrilled to be a Global Ambassador this year! I am an Irish student who has a great appreciation for other languages and different cultures. After a fantastic semester in Texas, I can't wait to tell you more about my Study Abroad experience in the USA. I am very passionate about chess, powerlifting, and pitch and putt. If I'm not seen reading the classics or creating TikToks on campus, you will find me studying Korean! :) BA in Journalism and Digital Communication with Law.
