When studying at a university in a foreign country, or even just studying in general, the last thought students may have in mind is spending more time in a library. Indeed, for some UL learners, the name Glucksman may be branded into their minds (but is also an exceptional institution worthy of absolute acclaim). After all, there is already an academia abundance, right? Well, the Limerick City Library offers more than books, giving everyone an experience befitting of lovely Limerick.

Limerick City Library is the local public institution serving residents of the city centre as well as certain surrounding areas. It is also part of Ireland’s national library system, guaranteeing the same quality service patrons would find at any other location. To register with this institution, patrons must provide evidence of residency within the area – which, for students, can involve to varying extents a letter from the university, copy of a rental agreement, utility invoice or anything displayed on the official website.

Like all member libraries, Limerick City’s has books, films, music and more for borrowing, computers for the public, a book club and community events localised to the area. As such, there is no shortage of study or leisure opportunities, and everything available is free.

Electronic services, including e-books, digital comics, language software and professional development classes, are also available freely to all patrons. The language and professional development offerings are especially useful for students wishing to expand upon their existing abilities. These classes are self-paced typically, so there is no pressure to complete any part of them at any time. Those who love learning will particularly appreciate these entities.

My favourite aspects of Limerick City Library are the books, music and local event recommendations. Specifically, I have been able to borrow works from authors and musicians whose pieces I love. If something I want is unavailable at the Limerick location, I can borrow it through the inter-library loan system, which both connects all member institutions in the country and notifies patrons via email message when their requested items are available. I can borrow everything I desire via this system, so I am grateful to have access to this excellent resource.

Perhaps the best part of Limerick City Library is the fact I am always treated both with respect and as an equal amongst others. Whenever I enquire about local happenings at the front desk, I am met with enthusiastic responses from friendly librarians. All the staff answer my questions, offer suggestions and give me local insights I may not discover otherwise in a professional, inclusive manner. Being an international student can be ostracising occasionally, but those who represent this institution ensure everyone is both recognised and has a voice.

A somewhat overlooked benefit of visiting Limerick City Library is its physical location. Situated on Barrow Street in the city centre, this institution is minutes from staple sights like the Milk Market, O’Connell Street, People’s Park and other localities. Weather-dependent (or not, if you are more adventurous), visitors can enjoy a fun day from their initial destination, seeing numerous parts of Limerick to be reminded of its charm.

Since Limerick City Library offers all its services to patrons free of charge – and in such an amicable fashion – it can feel almost wrong to suggest any drawbacks exist. Instead, it is helpful to note it is possible, as with any library system, not to find any copies of what you wish to borrow. I have not experienced this contingency so far, but I understand it is possible. Also, some items borrowed through inter-library loan can take time to arrive. In my case, something I once borrowed arrived about an entire month after I had made my request. Granted, it was an album from several decades ago which, when I checked upon its arrival, appeared not to have been borrowed in ages. Neither of these possibilities, however, detract much from the general experience. Rather, it is simply helpful to be cognizant of the fact they can occur.

In sum, Limerick City Library is an outstanding institution featuring quality items, services and staff. Any interest in leisure, learning and/or Limerick itself is all which is required to enjoy this institution as well as the experiences it provides. Contrary to what students who frequent the Glucksman and/or other libraries may believe, Limerick City Library has multiple opportunities for leisure, learning and personal growth and happiness. Spending more time in a library, especially this library, will not be the addition to your already full plate which breaks it. Rather, this Limerick locality will enrich your time in this gorgeous gem of an Irish city and county.
