Studying abroad at the University of Limerick in Ireland has been an incredible experience so far, and my adventure is just getting started. This is my first time studying abroad for an extended period, and as the first semester draws to a close, I can’t help but reflect on how quickly time has passed. It’s been nearly four months since I arrived in Ireland, and in that short time, I’ve experienced the charm of an Irish summer, the beauty of autumn, and the crisp cold of winter. Just two days ago, I witnessed the first snow of the season—gentle goose-feather flakes drifting down, creating a picturesque scene. Even more remarkably, in October, I had the privilege of seeing the Northern Lights for the first time, an experience I’ll never forget.

The Beauty of the University of Limerick

The University of Limerick (UL) is known for being one of the most beautiful campuses in Ireland, and it certainly lives up to its reputation. The blend of modern architecture and natural beauty creates a truly inspiring environment for learning. UL’s library is a particularly motivating place to study, with its stunning design and excellent facilities. For those who want to stay active, UL Sport offers a range of amenities, including a swimming pool, gym, climbing wall, and fitness classes to keep students engaged and healthy.

One of my favorite places on campus is the Living Bridge, which crosses the Shannon River. It’s a peaceful spot where I often linger to take in the view, especially during sunset, when the colors of the sky reflect beautifully on the water. The area in front of the Main Building is also a popular place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Weekend Adventures Around Ireland

In addition to my studies, I’ve been exploring Ireland on the weekends. UL Global organises voluntary day trips to nearby cities, and I’ve taken full advantage of these opportunities. One weekend, I visited King John’s Castle, a 13th-century riverside fortress in Limerick. Climbing to the top of the castle offered a stunning view of the city and a glimpse into Limerick’s rich history.

My friends and I also traveled to Dublin, the capital city, which exudes European charm with its iconic landmarks and vibrant culture. We visited Dublin Castle, the National Museum of Ireland, and Trinity College, where we explored the world-famous Trinity Library—the setting for some of the scenes in Harry Potter

Another unforgettable trip took us to the Cliffs of Moher, one of Europe’s most dramatic and awe-inspiring natural wonders. Standing at the edge of the cliffs, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, was a breathtaking experience. We also attended the Kilkenny Arts Festival, where the city is transformed into a hub of creativity, hosting performances, exhibitions, and more. During another trip, we took a boat ride to the Aran Islands, where we spotted dolphins and explored ancient ruins and limestone landscapes.

Ireland’s second-largest city, Cork, was another highlight of my travels. The nearby Blarney Castle, famous for its stone that supposedly grants the gift of eloquence, was a must-see.

A Mini-Break in Turkey

Before the semester officially began, the University of Limerick gave us a week-long mini-break. I seized this opportunity to travel with a group of Chinese friends to Turkey, a country rich in history and known for its otherworldly landscapes. We visited the surreal landscapes of Cappadocia, where we marveled at the sight of hot air balloons filling the sky. It was a truly romantic and unforgettable experience.

Expectations for the future of tourism

As the semester winds down and the Christmas holidays approach, I’m preparing for my next adventure. My friends and I have applied for Schengen visas, and after exams, we plan to explore the history and culture of several European countries. I’m excited to discover new destinations, and I’m sure this holiday will offer even more unforgettable moments.

Next semester, I’m determined to continue my studies with dedication while also making time for new adventures. I hope to turn the places I’ve always dreamed of visiting into wonderful, lasting memories.
