As a PhD student, we can often feel so isolated due to the various emails, hours spent writing, and various responsibilities. Here are some tips that may help you settle into life at UL.

Tip One: Make sure to have a work/life balance.

While this one can be difficult, it is extremely important. Take breaks, schedule time off, and remember it is a marathon, not a sprint. You are doing great, and you deserve that break!

Tip Two: Ask for help

It is okay to be overwhelmed, and honestly, it is perfectly normal. A PhD student can often feel isolated, but every PhD student feels it. So don’t forget to ask your friends, roommates, and supervisors for help. There are so many resources on campus and using them doesn’t make you any less capable!

Tip Three: Don’t compare yourself to others

On my very first day as a PhD student, someone told me that comparison is the thief of joy. If there is one bit of advice you take from this, I hope this is it. Please, don’t compare yourself to others, yes, it is easier said than done, but it is true. We are all on our own journeys and have our own obstacles, visible or not.

Tip Four: Don’t let the imposter syndrome take you down

IMPOSTER SYNDROME IS REAL! I promise you, every single one of your classmates and colleagues has felt it. Just don’t forget how awesome you are, the imposter syndrome will fade!

Tip Five: UL has great resources, use them

UL has a variety of resources, from workshops in the Regional Writing and learning centres to consulting with a librarian, there are a variety of academic sources. There are also chaplaincy services, counselling, First 7 Weeks and even support groups. All of the resources can help you throughout your journey.
