The University of Limerick (UL) has been my home for the past three years, not just as a PhD student but also as a proud member of the Student Global Ambassador programme. This incredible initiative, managed by UL Global’s International Marketing and Communications Office, has made a significant impact in my journey at UL, shaping my experiences and giving me memories that I will cherish for a lifetime.
The Beginning of a Beautiful Journey
Each year of the programme begins with an orientation that sets the tone for the months ahead. This is no ordinary orientation—it’s a day filled with warmth, camaraderie, and excitement. The venue is usually the elegant Strand Hotel in Limerick, and the event typically takes place on the last Saturday of September or the first Saturday of October.

I still remember my first orientation, when I walked into a room filled with students from around the world, each bringing their unique culture, background, and stories. From undergraduate to postgraduate students, the diversity was inspiring. The day began with warm welcomes, an introduction to the programme, and a bag of delightful goodies that immediately made us feel special. After a hearty lunch at the hotel, we embarked on an official outing—a tradition that continues every year. Over the past two years, we visited the enchanting Bunratty Castle, where the moments were joyfully captured in candid photographs. The day typically ends by 5:30 PM, but the friendships and fun are just beginning.
A Year Filled with Opportunities and Connections
The Student Global Ambassador programme is far more than its orientation. Throughout the year, we engage in a variety of activities that allow us to contribute to and promote the beauty of UL. Coffee mornings become regular meetups where ambassadors can bond over shared experiences. Photo and video shoots bring the campus to life, showcasing UL’s vibrant community to prospective students worldwide.

In my first year, I participated in promotional videos that captured the essence of campus life. One of my most rewarding experiences was a candid interview where I got to talk about my PhD research. It was a nice opportunity to share my work with a broader audience. Another important event was the impromptu hour-long interaction with the Indian Ambassador for Ireland. It’s moments like these that highlight how UL doesn’t just promote itself but also uplifts its students.
As my study load increased, the team was incredibly understanding, and I transitioned to writing blogs. These blogs became my creative outlet, a way to share my perspective while balancing the demands of a PhD programme. Through this, I realized that promoting UL wasn’t just about showcasing the university—it was also about personal growth and storytelling.
The programme’s flexibility is one of its greatest strengths. All activities are voluntary, ensuring that they fit seamlessly into our schedules. Alli McNamara, who has headed the programme for the past two years, along with Fiona O’Kearney, manages everything with remarkable efficiency and a personal touch. Their dedication ensures that the programme remains smooth, harmonious, and above all, enjoyable. Interns like Arisha Atif (Year 2), Aileen, and Connor (Year 3) have been really good go-to buddies for any query playing a significant role in making every experience memorable.

Being a UL Global Ambassador also opens doors to exploring the beauty of Ireland. From one-day trips organized in collaboration with touring agencies to rugby matches and theatre shows, the programme ensures that ambassadors experience the cultural richness of the country. Recently, we even had a pottery class session (couldn’t make it unfortunately). These activities provide a perfect balance to academic life, offering relaxation and fun while fostering deeper connections with fellow ambassadors.
What stands out most about the programme is the relationships it fosters. Each semester ends with a lovely lunch at one of UL’s fine restaurants, where we reflect on our shared experiences and receive a thoughtful souvenir to remember our time together. These aren’t just fleeting memories; they’re the foundation of lifelong friendships with people from all over the world. I learned about their cultures and expanded my perspectives in ways I never imagined.
That is why University of Limerick is more than just a place to study; it’s a community that welcomes you with open arms. The picturesque campus, the state-of-the-art facilities, and the vibrant student life make it an exceptional place to learn and grow. As a PhD student in the Department of Physics, I’ve had access to cutting-edge research facilities and the unwavering support of my supervisors. But what truly sets UL apart is its commitment to its students. Through programmes like the Student Global Ambassador initiative, UL ensures that every student feels valued and empowered.
A Heartfelt Thank You
As I write this, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunities I’ve had through the Student Global Ambassador programme. From promoting UL to experiencing the beauty of Ireland and forming lifelong friendships, every moment has been meaningful. To anyone considering applying for the programme, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the leap. It’s an experience that will enrich your time at UL and leave you with memories to treasure forever.

Thank you, UL Global, for this incredible journey. The memories we’ve made, are making, and will continue to make are a testament to the spirit of UL—a place where everyone belongs, grows, and thrives.
