The highlight of the UL MSc Public Health program is the eight-week public health practicum that the course offers. It is a great way to gain real-life public health experience in the workplace.

As an African who has worked within the Nigerian public health space, this was an opportunity to understand how the public health system works in Ireland.

My practicum placement was with the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) located in Dublin and the experience is one I will always cherish.

At the start of the practicum, I felt overwhelmed and some sort of anxiety crept in as I did not know what to expect. An avid overthinker, I made a conscious effort to approach the internship with optimism.

I spent the first few weeks at HIQA learning about the organization and understanding the various projects carried out. Working in the HIQA Health Technology Assessment Directorate, I was placed with a fantastic team that showcased great work ethic in an environment that provides everything you need to excel.

From working in a beautiful office space to participating in research on a critical health intervention, I can boldly say I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the eight-week placement. I particularly loved how the organization is people-centered, making sure the voices of the people are at the core of its work.

I was also privileged to present my internship experience to the directorate which was a brilliant opportunity to share my perspective as an intern.

The practicum was also an opportunity to exhibit all the competencies and skills I acquired whilst studying on the MSc Public Health program.
