Easing into life in UL

So you’ve made it to Ireland!! Congrats! You’re about to have the best time of your life, meet so many new people, and experience so many cool and exciting things while at UL. I thought I’d share some tips I’ve picked up along the way to make the transition to being here smoother and advice for getting the most out of your stay in Ireland.

Join a Club or Society

While clubs and societies may not seem like your thing at first, they’re actually the key to a whole bunch of new friends and experiences. I decided to join Ultimate Frisbee and the International Society and have met some really cool people who I wouldn’t have crossed paths with otherwise.

Aside from meeting new people they can also be a cool way to see more of the country as some clubs and societies do weekend trips or take you to places around Ireland for really cheap. My advice would be to try something new and see where it takes you. There’s a multitude of different clubs and societies and there’s definitely something out there for everyone.

Live in the moment

When you first come to UL it may seem very overwhelming as everything is new however my advice would be to take everything one step at a time. Really take a step back and try to not let the new-ness of everything overwhelm you. Trust that with time you’ll work out everything and things will fall into place.

Really try and cherish the first couple days because time flies when you’re here. Before you know it a month has already passed and you’re a quarter of the way done your journey.

Journal your experiences

This is something that I’ve tried to do as much as I can while I’m here. Before I came I got a journal that I told myself I would write in while I was here so I could look back on when it was time to go.

Even a month in, it’s cool to look back at my first week and remember what I did when I arrived. It will also serve as a memento years from now in ways that pictures and videos can’t. I couldn’t recommend this enough for anyone studying abroad.

Ask for help

Life in a new place, let alone studying in a new country, can be something that is scary at first and may overwhelm you. My best advice to anyone would be to make use of the resources that are provided to you and don’t be afraid to ask if you don’t know something.

People, especially people in Ireland, are more than ready to help you with whatever you want to know. Whether it be seeking help with assignments, help with transport, finding buildings etc, almost anyone you ask will be able to answer your questions. Without seeking help from others I don’t think I would know half the stuff I know or be as confident in my ability to navigate life here.

Hopefully these tips help you during your time abroad, enjoy yourself and have the time of your life!

Until next time,
