I know, starting with the weather might sound like a joke (okay fine, it was), but hear me out—there’s more than grey skies and surprise drizzles that connect these two beautifully different yet somehow similar countries. As someone who moved from the land of chai to the land of tea (yes, they’re different and I will defend both), I’ve often found myself smiling at the unexpected overlaps.

The Importance of Family:

For starters, both Indians and Irish people share a deep love for their families. Whether it’s a loud family gathering in an Indian home or a warm Sunday roast with the Irish fam, there’s always comfort in togetherness—and food, of course.

Hospitality/Festivities:

Speaking of which, hospitality? On point. Walk into any Indian or Irish household and you’re guaranteed a “You must eat something!” followed by a plate twice the size of your face. Add to that our shared obsession with festivals—we light lamps, they light up the streets; we throw colours, they throw parades.

Storytelling:

Don’t even get me started on storytelling. We’ve got grandmothers with bedtime epics, they’ve got folklore with fairies and banshees—same energy, different accents. And let’s just take a moment to appreciate how seriously both cultures take education. From “Did you get full marks?” to “How’s the course going, love?”—we’re all in this academic hustle together. Honestly, moving from India to Ireland has been like finding a familiar melody in a new song. The instruments might be different, but the tune feels just right.
