There are a couple of words I could use to describe Killarney National Park. Mesmerizing, enchanting, and utterly infatuating. However, I feel the word nurturing best defines my experience.

Within the first week of my study abroad, emotions were riding high as my life completely turned upside down. Everything I once knew and loved was 3,500 miles away. I was eighteen in another country and felt wholly lost. Yet, my three-hour escapade up Torc Mountain accompanied by a couple of strangers, shifted my mindset and study abroad experience completely.

On a sunny Saturday morning, some students from my program decided to venture to Killarney for a hike. Little did I know, these so-called strangers would soon become my closest friends.

After we took a bus out of UL to Killarney, we stopped for breakfast at a place called The Shire. This niche cafe provided us with fuel for our incoming mountain hike (I highly recommend the peanut butter and banana toast).

Once we were all fueled up, we started our hike. Completely engulfed by nature and the view of mountains, my worries began to subside. As we explored, venturing off the beaten path and getting lost, we laughed and joked. Soon the label of “strangers” became unfitting for our growing connection. This green sanctuary provided space to open up and truly see one another.

Standing at the top of Torc Mountain, alongside my new friends, this daring study-abroad adventure suddenly didn’t seem quite as daunting. The essence of possibility engulfed my spirit. I was encapsulated by the essence of Killarney and the atmosphere of possibility. The possibility of making real, genuine connections. The possibility of independence from everything I once
knew. The possibility that this study abroad experience could be one of the greatest stories of my life. This day not only forged friendships but continues to empower me to step out of my comfort zone. I like to compare each day here to a step up Torc Mountain. Each step I take, the closer I get to that rewarding view. To that life of endless possibility. At the end of this study abroad experience, I’ll look from the mountain and admire the memories and skills I’ve gained.

Killarney National Park is one of the most beautiful, enthralling, and nurturing landscapes I’ve ever laid eyes on. There is a peaceful and rejuvenating atmosphere in the air. Its seclusion from society enabled me to clear my head and stay grounded while I transitioned to life abroad. I would highly recommend grabbing some friends, or strangers in my case, and venturing on this
hiking excursion!
