In this personal blog, UL Global student ambassador Li Yiming talks about her experience here at the University of Limerick so far from her favourite spots on campus to the extensive range of clubs and societies.
When contemplating a blog topic, I hesitated for a while because the University of Limerick has provided me with so many joyous moments that it’s challenging to capture them all. Then it dawned on me, why not simply document the happiest moments I’ve experienced here?
As a resident of Cappavilla, I’ve been fortunate to witness rainbows after the rain, vibrant sunsets during dinner hours, and flocks of crows elegantly gliding low across the skies. The moments during dinner are consistently serene and fill me with a sense of happiness.

The Living Bridge is my everyday path. It has bestowed upon me a plethora of picturesque scenes – flowing river, willow trees by the banks, cloud-dotted skies, and the occasional drizzle. Every day, crossing the bridge feels like walking through a painting. Swans have become my familiar companions beneath the bridge, and I always look forward to spotting them during my crossings. The view from the bridge towards the Plassey House is particularly enchanting, and I often observe children playing on the lawn in front of the house, while the joyful dogs frolic about.

One of the key reasons I chose UL is the array of clubs and societies. The abundance of club activities at UL has made it a daunting task to choose, as each one appears equally appealing and enticing. They have prepared everything for you; all that’s required is to join and savor the fun! Given my limitations, I’ve enrolled in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), OPC, and the Equestrian Club.
I’ve fallen in love with all clubs! BJJ is an incredibly cool sport, a fusion of strength and strategy. In the initial classes, my movements were slow and my basics shaky. However, after a little over a month, I can now execute forward rolls smoothly and engage in simulated combats with friends based on foundational techniques. Experiencing this gradual progress is an unparalleled delight! Beyond the enjoyable journey of learning BJJ, the community aspect is another reason for my profound enjoyment. Whether it’s the coaches or fellow students, whether beginners or veterans, everyone, without exception, is exceedingly friendly and understanding. The coaches purposefully slow down their instructions, using simple language to explain techniques, making it easier for international students to grasp. Every session is filled with laughter and camaraderie. In this environment, there has been a growing number of female participants, making it even more engaging and enjoyable. Girls are the best!

OPC’s Climbing is what captivated me the most. Coach Jim left a strong impression on me. He’s kind, genuine, patient, and attentive, particularly to beginners. Coupled with UL’s amazing climbing wall, the activity brims with excitement and challenges. Encouraged by Jim and fellow enthusiasts, I’ve taken on various climbing challenges I had never envisioned before. The sensation of overcoming oneself and pushing limits is incomparably wonderful.

I am still in the early stages of exploring UL’s diverse range of clubs, and in the future, I intend to join even more clubs to explore further.
In the midst of these joyful moments at UL, I’m perpetually reminded of the beauty and vibrancy of life. Be it daily glimpses of rainbows and sunsets or my participation in dynamic club activities, my university life is enriching and fun-filled. These moments have not only gifted me with cherished memories but also taught me that in continuous exploration and challenge, we can discover our potential, surpass ourselves, and realize more possibilities. At UL, I’ve made new friends, encountered fresh experiences, and found my happiness. In the future, I will continue to explore additional opportunities, join more clubs, forge new connections, and savor the rich tapestry of university life. UL, thank you for these moments of joy that I will forever treasure in my heart.
